• NASHVILLE PROGRESSIVE METAL AT ITS FINEST.

Our influences are diverse, spanning genres ranging from funk & jazz to classical, to prog & metalcore. Influences include: Deftones, Between the Buried and Me, August Burns Red, Alice in Chains, Chick Corea, and Pat Metheny, just to name a few. See a full list of influences >>

We aim to be the bridge for the average listener, between unfathomably complex technical prog & boring commercial metal; music that the musician can appreciate for its intelligence and intricacy, but, simultaneously, music that the listener can find compelling, engaging, & interesting.

    MIKE SCHII | VOCALS

I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life until college. I had never sang anything, no lessons, nothing outside of my car until I was 18+, though I always loved music and spent 14 years as a drummer. God is faithful, though, and my passion is to reach the hopeless and lost with music. There's a depth and an urgency to music that can penetrate into even the most despondent. Plus, everyone likes throwing down.
I am also very opinionated, and very weird. If you e-mail the band, I will probably answer, and probably say more than you expected me to.

DJ ADKINS | GUITARS & VOCALS

After graduating Belmont University's Music School in 2011, I went to rehab for addiction to Mountain Dew. As a part of my rehab, I took a remarkable trip to Alaska, where I discovered the light of Mango Orange Juice -- I have since made a triumphant recovery. I currently co-own Sick Island Studios in Nashville and write riffz inspired by the great philosopher Gnarphat.

    PAXTON | BASS GUITAR

From high school to about midway through freshman year of college, I was torn between pursuing a career in medicine and a career in music. A series of events in my life led me to the conclusion that if you have a dream, you must go for it while you can. I've come to appreciate many musical styles but heavy music has remained my true passion over the years.

    IAN | DRUMS & PERCUSSION

I've been a drummer for about 8 years now, and have been influenced by rock, jazz, and metal of all kinds since I was but a wee lad. The main focus of my music studies have been jazz and metal, though metal has held on to the better part of my passion. There's nothing more satisfying to me than thrashing out, breaking sticks, throwing down, etc. I feel connected to both the instrument and the entire genre on such a level that I know metal will always have the center stage for me.

"A PORTRAIT OF HOME" Original Release Jan. 25th, 2013.
Available in CD & Digital Download.

A Portrait of Home was recorded primarily at Sick Island Studios in Nashville, TN. Additional vocals for Mike Schii were recorded by Eric Westmaas. A Portrait of Home expounds upon the message left somewhat ambiguous in the first EP, with recurring themes of confusion, anger, misplaced priorities, and hopelessness, with ultimate triumph over adversity. Listen for sweeping bridges, brutal breakdowns, mathematical precision, and the lush piano outro and 8-part choral harmonies in The Peripheral Sound.

"SPLIT BY THE SUN" Original Release May 16th, 2011.
Available in CD & Digital Download.

Split by the Sun, the 1st EP, was recorded and produced at Spider Studios in Cleveland, OH by Tony Gammalo (It Dies Today/Chimaira/Misery Signals/Drowning Pool). Hidden track “A Portrait of Home” was recorded by DJ Adkins at RCA Studio B in Nashville, TN. Somewhat of a concept album, Split by the Sun follows the trials of an unnamed protagonist through relatable emotions like self-doubt and lack of purpose, pleading for divine intervention that never seems to come to save him from a life actively trying to "kick him low"." At the cusp of a break-through, the album ends ambiguously, our protagonist still lost and "going in circles". The hidden track hints at the ultimate redemption to come in the following album.
Listen for rapid-fire time signature changes, jazz/funk fusion contrasted with blistering guitar riffs, eerie harmony, Schii effortlessly shifting from pitch to screams within the same phrases, and beautiful piano hiding amidst the metal.

  • INVICTA | NASHVILLE PROGRESSIVE AT ITS FINEST | FROM THE BEGINNING...

Invicta began rather loudly in a college dorm room with guitarist/songwriter DJ Adkins and singer Mike Schii both combining musical talents and influences to create a sound clearly distinctive from the stagnating confines of the metal genre as a whole. Complex melodies and multi-faceted harmonies reminiscent of Alice in Chains and the Deftones combined with intricate guitar riffs in the vein of Between the Buried and Me, adding crushing breakdowns influenced by metalcore staples like August Burns Red to round things out. The final effect is a style of metal that can be many things to many listeners; brutal for the heavy fans, melodic and beautiful for critics of metal, intelligent and multi-layered for the sophisticates, and meaningful and uplifting for those awaiting a message.

God’s hand was at work in and with Invicta, and soon after completion of the group’s first set of songs they added Theo Carnavos on bass, Michael Thompson on guitar, and Bryant Lowry on drums.  Shows were played, faces were melted, and music was made.

Over the next couple years though, members came and went, with DJ and Schii remaining firmly at the core as always. Two music videos and two EPs stemmed from the extended touring hiatus, Split by the Sun and A Portrait of Home. Now Paxton Williams’ technical mastery of the bass and Ian Nagy’s crushing drum skills have joined to finally round out the group, and the metal community is taking notice. Invicta believes in the power and purity of hope amidst adversity, and through tackling difficult subjects like suicide and child abuse within their music, ultimately strives to impart a message of assurance.

Our influences are diverse, spanning genres ranging from funk and jazz to classical, to prog and metalcore. Influences include: Mudvayne, Between the Buried and Me, Animals As Leaders, Periphery, August Burns Red, Sky Eats Airplane, It Dies Today, Godsmack, Alice in Chains, Disturbed, Slipknot, Deftones, Incubus, Meshuggah, Avenged Sevenfold, Opeth, P.O.D., Tool, Pantera, Underoath, King Crimson, As I Lay Dying, The Arcane Order, Born of Osiris, Killswitch Engage, Lamb of God, Metallica, Linkin Park, Threat Signal, Woe Is Me, The Word Alive, Switchfoot and many others.

We aim to be the bridge for the average listener, between unfathomably complex technical prog and boring commercial metal; music that the musician can appreciate for its intelligence and intricacy, but, simultaneously, music that the average listener can find compelling, engaging, and interesting.
